Founded By American psychologist and consciousness researcher Charles Tart in 1977, the ISSC is non-profit educational and research institution created to study various aspects of consciousness, including altered states, transpersonal experiences, and the potential for extrasensory perception (ESP). The institute's mission is to expand the understanding of consciousness using scientific methodologies, aiming to integrate scientific rigor with the exploration of phenomena often considered marginal by mainstream science.
The work at the ISSC involves both experimental research and theoretical development. This includes controlled experiments and research to understand phenomena like telepathy, clairvoyance, mediumship, remote viewing (spiritual sight), near-death experiences (NDEs), shared-death experiences, and the impact of altered states on human cognition and perception.
